the brief

Arc Games tasked us to bring back their fan favourite, Gigantic, back to life and modernised for current platforms.Originally launching in 2017, as a free to play title and built in Unreal Engine 3, Arc Games want to recreate the game for modern audiences creating a brand new SKU called Gigantic:Rampage Edition. This new game was to transform the original Gigantic to a premium title with;
  • Cross play
  • Overhauled  player progression
  • New maps
  • A new rank mode
  • A plethora of quality of life improvements.

Gameplay improvements

As this was a re-launch of a previously released title, the Abstraction team took the opportunity to work on all areas of the game, starting with gameplay improvements such as quality of life changes, first-time user experience and tutorial updates, improving the matchmaking system, and tackling the technical challenge of implementing cross-play for all platforms. 

Design and Art

Not stopping there, our Design and Art teams flexed their creative muscles to build entirely new gorgeous maps, exhilarating game modes, and fresh characters. The team was delighted to add their own touch to an established franchise while also diligently ensuring all new features remained faithful to the original game the fans love.

Monetization and progression

While the original Gigantic was a live-service free-to-play game, Gigantic: Rampage Edition is a single-purchase game with no microtransactions. Given, this, Abstraction had to revisit the monetization and progression systems.  This required an overhaul of the progression system, not only ensuring everything is unlockable by playing but also creating an engaging and rewarding experience that feels balanced for players.
